3 out of 5 stars Protective like the D200 Armor, but differently in several ways   August 20, 2008

My long awaited for D300 Armor looks re-engineered from the D200 Armor cover. They got rid of some of the D200 model's weak points, such as a lack of bottom which made for squashed sides when you tried to use a tripod, and the fact that you couldn't use the D200 grip without a razor blade customizing device. But it has a few new weak points of it's own.

In the ad photos shown above, the cover looks amazingly the same as the one for the D200 (hmmm, is that a D200 camera I see hiding under that Armor in the D300 Armor ad pics?) Anyway, the cover finally arrived but looks quite a bit different from the one shown - not worse or anything like that, but different! I thought the small control buttons on the back of the camera would be covered like on my D200 Armor but they are not, in fact there are now some large port cut outs in the rubber to accommodate some of the buttons which takes away some protective value that the D200 Armor offered. Also, someone needs to edit the technical data in this ad because there are no painted buttons on it(it ain't got no buttons!!) and there are some other minor cosmetic differences as well.

I do like the fact that most of the camera is easy to grip, and this can be a benefit when holding it for difficult shots or trying to save it during accidental fumbles! A great benefit over the D200 Armor is now the bottom of my D300 is well protected by a thick flat rubber bottom plate that goes on my tripod (yeah!!!) But here is an important warning (as well as a potential accessory sales tip):

You will loose the rubber bottom plate if you are not carefull!! My bottom plate randomly and very quietly falls off when I take my camera out of my bag! It is designed to come off to replace the camera battery, but it does not lock back on to the cover very securely, in fact the little rubber leash piece that is supposed to hold it to the cover slips off too easily also. So, watch for 'slightly' used replacement plates for sale at your favorite auction sites soon, they will be a hot item!

Oh yea, what is the dinky lens hood for? My D200 Armor came with one also, is it a doggie chew toy?

Ok, so I do like my D300 Armor with all its limitations and will keep it on my camera because it now works without the risk of me loosing the bottom (thanks to a custom tripod mounting lock for the bottom that I made out of a nylon screw and big flat washer I got from the local hardware store), and my camera is protected from bumps nicely, and nobody knows what I'm shooting with (I hate trademarks on my stuff, and the D300 Armor covers it all up (not like in the photo). So now that I have had a chance to use it for a while, I'd say I'm happy I bought it and would give it 4 stars if i could on this review. But, I do have to say that I would have been really bummed if I lost the bottom!!
