Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The effective arrangement of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and aspherical glass elements has created a lens of compact dimensions. With an overall length of 84.7mm (3.3in.), it is the smallest lens of this focal range. This lens offers a large aperture of F 2.8 over its entire range of focal lengths, which is ideal for low light situations both indoors and out. It has a large depth of field that offers the photographer greater freedom of expression.By using a new technology and optical design, this lens satisfies the needs of digital photography. Two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements are provided for effective compensation of color aberration, which is a common problem with wide-angle lenses. Four aspherical lenses, one molded glass type and three hybrid aspherical types, offer excellent correction for distortion as well as all types of aberration. The design concept of this lens is especially suitable for the characteristics of Digital SLR Cameras. New coating reduces flare and ghost, which is a common problem of digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance. This lens has excellent correction for "light-fall-off", which is a common problem of large aperture lenses. The design ensures sufficient illumination of the corners of the image. It is capable of taking pictures with a minimum focusing distance of 38cm (15.0in) at all focal lengths. It is very effective for close-up photography. The high performance inner focus system is particularly suitable for using circular polarizing filters and a petal-type hood as the front of the lens does not rotate. This lens is also equipped with a zoom lock that eliminates "Zoom Creep". This remarkably compact, high performance zoom lens is ideally suited for traveling.

2 out of 5 stars Wondering if actually an EX   November 14, 2008
Thane D. Snell (Tampa, FL USA)
I read the mixed reviews here on Amazon and figured why not try it. Alot of EX lenses produce great pictures. I took a few hundred pics and as said in other reviews the results were dissappointing. Some pictures turned out sharp and in focus however the majority of them were soft and unuable. I downloaded a calibration sheet and tested all of my lenses. All of my nikon lenses focus point were dead on, however the sigma always focused 3mm short leaving the focus point soft and unsharp. Yes you could crank up the f-stop to eliminate the softness, like a f/ 5.6 but whats the point. I have a cheap nikon D that will shoot @ that range easily and very well. The whole point of buying a f/ 2.8 is so you can shoot @ 2.8 in low lighting and when wanting a shallow depth of field.

4 out of 5 stars Great lens, affordable price   September 2, 2008
Matthew Y. Ho Kang (Glendale, CA United States)
I use this lens for my D50 and F100. Works great on both. The focus is a bit slower than Nikkor, but the size, durability, and weight of the lens is great for the price. Expect some vignetting when wide open at 24mm (f2.8) on full frame, but no worries for DX. This should be my default zoom lens for many years to come.

2 out of 5 stars Not sharp enough to be worth it   August 29, 2008
David K. Mansbach (CA, USA)
Tried two copies for Canon AF. Second was sharper than the first, but still not truly sharp. By which I mean, when using f # below 4.5, a printed photo or slightly zoomed in photo (anything you can really look at that's bigger than a quarter of a laptop screen) has very blurry details. Shots were properly focused, sharpness was just poor. With the 2.8 you can get the shotindoors/low-light, but it's nothing better than quick snapshot quality.
The Canon 18-55 that came with the camera was a good value, but this lens is mediocre at the bigger apertures and really provides no advantage over the kit lens.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Deal!   May 31, 2008
Jcbye (Denver, Co)
So maybe I am very lucky. My copy of this lens is superb. Yes there is a difference in sharpness when shooting at 2.8 but it is still very sharp and once you go smaller than the 4's it is SHARPER than comparable nikon lenses.

This lens is quiet, focuses fast and zooms smoothly on my D80. All three of these things are issues others have had but I do not have. Cameta has a good return policy so why not try it at this price? I am happy I decided to go for it and feel like it is one of the best deals in my bag. Please note: (I have several fast pro Nikon lenses I have compared this too when making my review, not just other 3rd party lenses)

5 out of 5 stars Way better than expected   May 21, 2008

I know that Sigma is not the best when it come to QC. The sample variations can be huge but if you get a good one they are very good. This lens is very good, reasonably sharp wide open and very sharp stopped down. CA's are controlled and I have had no focusing problems with my D200. For the money it is an excellent value.
