Buyer Beware! February 12, 2010 Hyperworld dotbiz (Traverse City MI) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
For years I have told all my friends, family, and coworkers to avoid Gateway. Anyone I have ever known who owned a Gateway computer has had problems with it. My Dad worked for UPS and he told me they would ship computers to random people who never ordered it, hoping they would accept the COD for it, and sometimes he would have a dozen large computer boxes he would need to send back to Gateway. This shady practice speaks volumes about Gateway as a company. I went to a big box store to buy a computer, and as a package deal it included a monitor. It was displayed with a different monitor, but this Gateway HX2000 was the one that was actually as part of the deal. I initally told the salesman I would give up the $80 price break and buy a different monitor. Then I remembered that Acer bought them, and have never had a monitor go bad on me, and I have owned many since I own a web design company. So against my better judgement I bought this monitor.
After 3 hours of operation the backlight no longer functions, and the screen is black. The screen actually lights up for a couple seconds, then turns itself off. I knew immediately this was hardware failure. Yet the Gateway tech I contacted thought it was related to the BIOS. I explained to him it worked fine, and the BIOS was never changed. He still refused to honor the warranty until I checked the BIOS. He couldn't even tell me what settings in the BIOS to check. He said some really dumb things, but I won't list them here. But I said you must be in India, which he confirmed. I contacted a different tech who also had poor english, and did get them to honor the warranty. But it is going to cost me about $30 to ship, plus packing supplies, gasoline, and my time.
Ok, I must be some kind of idiot since all these people are raving what a great monitor this is, right? Please go to a search engine and type in 'gateway backlight problem' and you will see hundreds of people with the same problem. Using a different search string I found thousands of people wanting Gateway to recall their monitors because they don't last longer than a year. The problem is with three capacitors in the monitor. I am an electronics hobbyist, and used to be a certified technician, and can tell you capacitors cost about $0.10 (10 cents). They could have put high quality parts in for about 30 cents more. They could have saved all these people from having a defective $150 monitor for mere pocket change. I could just fix this problem myself, but I want to cost them money.
This is a great looking monitor, and has a great picture. It is very reflective so that may be a turn-off to some people. However, this monitor is not reliable, so I would highly recommend getting the extended warranty if you want to take a gamble. I have a 17" Sony monitor that is 6 years old, and I picked it up to use as a temp while this one is getting repaired, and it weighed twice as much. The construction is much more solid than the Gateway, and just feels like a higher-quality product. I hope I save someone a major headache with this review.
Just what I needed January 30, 2010 Camaslady (Idaho, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This monitor is fantastic. I had an older monitor that came with my computer and did not realize the clarity that the new ones have. Although not very knowledgable about computers, I was able to install it myself. It would be nice if there were better instructions and in print rather than a disk. Without a working monitor, I could not see the owners manual! Also, since my son or son-in-law usually install accessories, I had a hard time with the cables. I didn't know you had to use a screwdriver to get them in and out. I am probably lucky that I didn't ruin my computer by pulling on the cable ends for over an hour. I do like the monitor a lot and just hope that it is installed correctly! It works.

I was using a laptop for years. This is great. Nice price, prompt delivery, all I could ask for. I am happy with this purchase.
20 in gateway wide screen lcd display November 23, 2009 banks (wisconsin) When ordring this Gateway black wide screen thru amazon.com the black widescreen shipped to me inside of 3 days boxed and packaged very nice. The wide screen itself is 20 inches in diagnal width and after i connected it, the screen adjusted automatically to give me a clear, colorfull picture. The size of the screen and picture quality is WELL worth the price. Oh i will do this again.

I was actually at a big brand box store looking around, and had in mind the Acer x233h for awhile. But I came across this and another brand and was wowed by both of them. I changed the desktops to test them out, and changed the aspect to 1600x900. This one was a great deal price wise, and I immediately ordered one when I got home later that night.
I did some research online, and people liked this monitor, and found out that Acer is making and bought out Gateway awhile back. I had an Acer at work, and bought one for my mother and had good experiences with them. So when I heard that Acer was making these Gateways, it would then be my next widescreen display.
I went from a 4:3 flat panel 19" to this. I love it. It's 16:9, and with DVI runs movies and video very clear. Games now look the way they're supposed to. And it looks very nice on my desktop.
Wish I had gotten the 23" version, but I'll probably end up buying another hx2000 for a dual monitor setup. I love it.
