4 out of 5 stars Very Good Keyboard   July 2, 2010

Nice keyboard. It has a nice feel. You do have to install drivers for Mac OSX for all keys to work properly... but that's no big deal.

Within 3 days of receiving these 2 keyboards
one had the Return Key fall off...
    They FEEL CHEAP
I really want both of them out of here...
    and in the Trash
DOES THAT TELL YOU HOW CRAPPY THEY ARE...

5 out of 5 stars It's all about the feel   June 6, 2010
    Scott (Eugene, Oregon, United States)
I have to agree with all of the positive reviews! I've been a Mac person for years, and have never considered another keyboard until I needed to buy another one and read reviews here. For me, everything else is peripheral to the how it feels to type on the keyboard. It makes my extended Mac keyboard feel like driving a truck, and I immediately started typing quite a bit faster. It's also quite a bit thinner, so I don't have to raise my hands as high in the air to type on it. The combined effect is that it's much more comfortable to use, especially if you work on your Mac all day as I do.

I do have a couple of niggling complaints, but as I said, they aren't central to the experience. I'd like the USB ports to be on the rear rather than on the sides. If anything is plugged into the right hand port, the wire interferes with where you normally are moving the mouse around, and if you use more than one keyboard, the anything in the left hand port will interfere with that. And the when I tried to install the drivers that enable the volume and cd/dvd eject keys, my Stuffit Expander crashed rather than open the dmg. I downloaded the drivers from MacUpdate at :
    [...]
    and now they work normally.

I like this keyboard so much I'm seriously considering buying a couple more and replacing the ones on my other Macs, I like it that much.

    1 out of 5 stars NOT a scissors-type mechanical switch; just a CHEAP keyboard   May 30, 2010

The claim that the Macally slim keyboard is a "scissor switch" keyboard is PATENTLY FALSE. This keyboard is decidedly NOT a mechanical switch keyboard of any sort. Anyone who thinks otherwise need only pop off the extra key that isn't used, below the shift key on the right. If you pop this off, which you can easily do with your fingernail, you will see a scissor-like mechanism, but the SOLE FUNCTION OF THIS IS TO HOLD THE CAP IN A STABLE, ROUGHLY LEVEL ORIENTATION! THIS SCISSOR-LIKE MECHANISM HAS ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON THE FEEL OF THE SWITCH!!

The switch itself is contained within the little plastic capsule that looks like a miniature bottle with a neck. When you push straight down on the top of that neck, the neck inverts down into the capsule. The feel is slightly different from the feel of a typical membrane/dome switch, but the difference is negligible. To the extent that there is any difference in feel, it has only to do with the behavior of that little bottle-shaped plastic capsule, and has absolutely nothing to do with that little scissor-like mechanism that you see under the cap!

I REPEAT: THIS IS _NOT_ A SCISSORS-TYPE MECHANICAL SWITCH!!!

For intents and purposes, it is an ordinary membrane/dome switch.

In a true scissors switch, the mechanism introduces a non-linearity between motion in the direction of the key cap travel and motion in the direction along which the spring is compressed. It is this non-linearity that gives the mechanical scissor switch its characteristic feel. This keyboard does not use this mechanism! It does not have the feel of a scissors-type mechanical switch, because it is not a scissors-type mechanical switch!

This is just a cheap, run-of-the-mill keyboard. The mechanism is cheap. The force is excessive from when you first start to depress the key. The top surfaces of the individual keys are much too flat, and because of this, my fingers tend to wander from side-to-side, so much so in fact that I have difficulty keeping my fingers on the home keys. Despite the scissor-like mechanism that is supposed to hold the caps level, they tend to wobble when you press the key off-center. The exacerbates the difficultly in sensing the centers of the keys, and this is highly annoying. In high-quality keyboards, there is a cylindrical protrusion on the under surface of the caps, that slides within an opposing cylinder, thus preventing the cap from wobbling.

I can find nothing in particular to like about this keyboard, and no reason whatsoever to recommend it. It is just a cheap keyboard that is fully in line with the cost. If you want a keyboard that feels like a cheap $25 keyboard, then this one is probably as good as any. But it is NOT, I repeat NOT a high quality keyboard that you can buy for $25. You get what you pay for, and nothing more.

4 out of 5 stars Icekey keyboard   May 30, 2010
    Mark T. Quinn (Spokane, WA)
I was looking for an external keyboard to augment the one on my Macbook Pro. I am a graduate student working on a thesis and needed more room that a cramped laptop one. Actually, the 15" laptop isn't bad, but I also elevated it about 5 inches and this, along with the Icekey, is a very good setup. The Macally is very good for the price and does feature a nice length cord so that I could actually pull it off my desk and hold it in my lap, if need be. But so far I've been satisfied with having it stationary. Nice tactile feel and it's quiet, it has additional USB ports (that won't support thumb drives-they need more power). The only downside is I know the bright white color will probably be a bit hard to clean. Overall, I'm happy.
