This quadruple interface makes the d2 Quadra ideal for demanding multi-media applications that require extreme speed as well as universal connectivity. The USB and FireWire connections ensure that you can transfer or back up your data from your laptop or other computers, while the eSATA interface offers a transfer rate of up to 300 MB per second (3Gbits/sec). The LaCie d2 is compatible with Windows, including Vista, and Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, including Time Machine, making it an ideal partner for your Mac. Time Machine automatically backs up your Mac's system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents to an external hard drive and lets you easily go back in time to recover anything. Superior Drive Performance for Power Users Built for power users such as video editors, the d2 Quadra features a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and a cache of at least 16 MB. Perfect for digital content creation, audio/video editing, DVD authoring, web animation, and more, the d2 Quadra can handle multiple demanding professional tasks. It can also be daisy-chained via FireWire or connected to your DV camera and is even bootable in FireWire for Mac and in eSATA for Mac/PC. With a capacity of 750 GB, the d2 Quadra can hold up to 750,000 photos, 262,500 songs, or 52 hours of DV video. If you purchase multiple drives, they can be daisy-chained and set to RAID 1 for data redundancy and protection, or RAID 0 for even greater speed. The d2 Quadra also offers three power management options: "Auto" for energy efficiency; "On" for instant access; and "Off" for data protection. The drive also lets you back up files or launch any application with a simple push of the front blue button. This "shortcut button" can be configured to launch any document or application, or initiate the included EMC Retrospect Express software that offers automated backups. Smart, Elegant Design and Loaded with Software With the d2 Quadra, Neil Poulton has fashioned a unique, attractive and functional drive that offers excellent heat dissipation features and space-saving options for stacking. The fanless aluminum heat sink design features exterior ridges that provide 60 percent more surface area for heat dissipation, keeping the drive quiet and as safe as possible at all times. The d2 Quadra will sit nicely in an upright position alongside your PC or Mac machines, or it can be stacked horizontally with other drives or rack mounted to save desktop space. Set-up and use is quick and easy, thanks to LaCie's preloaded Setup Assistant that helps format the hard disk according to your needs. For instance, the d2 Quadra lets you easily create a FAT32 partition for use with Macs. With the LaCie 1-Click Backup, you can backup any file into the location of your choice with a simple "click"--either via the desktop icon, or CTRL-S on your keyboard. And LaCie's Shortcut Button lets you easily launch any application with one push. Also included with the d2 is EMC Retrospect professional backup software for PC and Mac users. This award-winning software offers several back-up options, including fast backups and scheduled back-up of either a single file or your complete system. With EMC Retrospect Express, you'll never have to worry about losing your data again. The drive measures a slim 1.7 x 6.3 x 6.8 inches (WxHxD), weighs 3.31 pounds, and is backed by a 3-year limited warranty. Great Product September 6, 2008 ugamit (Georgia) Purchased LaCie Quadra 750 one month ago. Running LaCie on 3 year old Dell Dimension Desktop with Windows XP. Works great to date. Very solid construction, quiet operation on my desk, runs cool. Ability to interconnect with my other hard drives to speed up file transfer is a great feature. I'm replacing all of my older hard drives one by one with LaCie Quadra's because of my experience with this first purchase.
Great Product August 30, 2008 Mark Smith (Boston, MA USA) This LaCie drive is fantastic. It's my 2nd LaCie external hard disk (the other is full with home video). I've had the first one for 4 years and could not be more satisfied. A very stable product with no problems and very easy to use. I use them both for Mac and PC and the variety of connectivity is perfect. I've also just purchased a rack to mount both of them in. In all, a great looking and functioning product that is well worth the slightly higher price.
LaCie 750 GB August 23, 2008 B. Cowan (Delaware, USA) This external hard drive runs extremely quiet. It was extremely easy to hook up and begin running-up and running within 10 minutes. Using the FireWire 800 allowed me to download very heavy HD content from my camcorder in real time without any interruption. It has done everything I had hoped it would. I feel this product works better than my Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive mainly because I have the option of the higher FireWire. I have been using this product extensively for 6 weeks and have nearly 250-300 GB stored on this LaCie and I have had no trouble retrieving any of my data.
Super fast, multi-interface, awesome storge solution August 14, 2008 J. Remick (Moscow, ID USA) If you need a backup drive or just additional storage space, this is probably the best option available (or other d2 Quadra drives). I bought this to relieve the stress from my iMac's 320GB hdd.
First, the quality of this drive is amazing. It's very solid, sturdy and has no fan! It comes with all the cables for each connection type. It stays very cool, even during continuous use.
Second, the transfer speed is fantastic. I was getting sick and tired of USB2 and finally made the switch to Firewire. This had FW800 that seems hard to find for storage devices unless they are really expensive. I just wish my iMac had eSATA! The FW800 is incredibly fast though, I love it!
I haven't upgraded to leopard yet so I use "Super Duper!" for backups and it was a snap with this drive. Every morning at 3:30am my iMac is backed up safely and quiety. I will be getting a second one very very soon for my growing digital video library. I also run my iTunes library from this drive and it works beautifully while keeping my iMac hdd free for applications and other things.
CONS: Ok, if you have this in a bedroom where you sleep, the blue light on the front is BRIGHT. I just stand something in front of it and that works great but I wish they had a way to dim the light. If you work in a dark room (I do), it isn't bothersome.
As a previous reviewer mentioned, you do only get approximately 700GB of actual space. This shouldn't reduce the rating on this item. ALL hard drives manufacturers advertise their storage space in increments of 1000, when it should actually be 1024. So 750GB / 1000MB / 1000KB / 1000B = 750x10^9 / 1024B / 1024KB / 1024MB = 698.492GB <-- Amount of actual space. This is because of the hard drive manufacturers, not LaCie.
If you're looking for more storage or a backup drive, this is it. This is the best external hdd I've ever owned. I also bought an external dvd burner from lacie, which is fantastic. Firewire is awesome!
LaCie 301826U d2 August 13, 2008 L. F. Mcclure (Columbia S.C.) I have had very good experience with this Lacie product (actually two of them) until yesterday. I had to disconnect one of them (the one for time machine on my iMAc) and reboot the iMac to get my computer to again recognize the hard drive. My error message was that "device can not be found."
I am new to both the iMac and to LaCie products and don't know what caused this problem and can!t determine what caused the problem. I've already had one of two new Western Digital "Home Edition" drives crash so I'm not sure if there is a problem with the iMAC or the hard drives. I love my iMAc and until last night had no complaints with the Lacie's
