3 out of 5 stars Value for Money   August 15, 2008

The Hard drive is good. But the seal was tampered when I received. I don't know if they will hold it in warranty or not...hope it does not require the same. But at the price I got it, its fine.

4 out of 5 stars Have used it for six months, no problems   August 9, 2008

I've used this drive for six months now (I usually wait at least that amount of time to write a review so I have time to experience any breakdowns in performance). So far, so good. I've had no problems at all with the unit.

The unit in fact works better than I thought it would, given its relatively inexpensive price. Setup was a breeze. I plugged it in to a USB port and it worked immediately.

The drive is much faster than I thought it would be, and I've even started downloading and burning files directly to this backup drive, skipping my hard drive altogether. (I'm mainly using this drive as an archive for media and application files, photographs, podcasts and large Photoshop docs. I'm not using it as a hard-drive mirror.)

I imagine the portability works well, as unplugging the unit from its port is quite easy and the unit is small enough for easy carrying. I should mention that the unit's manual warns that plugging and unplugging the unit too often without shutting it down first might cause the USB port to stop working entirely. I'm guessing this is something that seldom happens -- and is probably something any device with a USB plug can cause, not just this particular drive -- but the fact the manufacturer felt obliged to mention it at all is a bit worrisome (and the manual's instructions for shutting the unit down aren't the most helpful).

The drive only takes up one USB port unless your USB ports are unpowered or a few of them are and you're trying to use one of those unpowered ports to power this drive. You only need to use the second plug if plugging the first one doesn't power the unit. (You can always power this drive with a regular ol' power adapter, but that's kind of a drag if you're running out of sockets). To repeat, I had no problem powering up right away but some folks, especially ones with older computers, just might.

Lastly, the unit is very small -- gotta love drives with this small of a footprint. It's also lightweight. The cord isn't very long, though, but this hasn't caused me any headaches; I've set the drive on top of my computer's casing and it's still within reach if I need to get to it.

All in all, I'm very satisfied. (Wish the manual was a bit clearer, though.)

4 out of 5 stars nice drive, but . . .   August 6, 2008
MovieNut (El Cajon, CA United States)
This is a nice compact drive that will fit anywhere on your desk; and a good thing too because the cable is only 20" long. So plan on putting this drive next to your USB Hub. And it uses a special cable too, so don't plan on just purchasing a longer cable. And you MUST use a powered USB Hub - don't buy this drive if you don't have a powered Hub. (actually, you can use a non-powered Hub, but then you must use the SimpleTech power supply which is not included - you're on your own to locate and purchase one)

I plugged it in and my Vista Home Premium installed the drivers in less than a minute. However, when I went to put my first file on the drive, it locked up my system solid - I've never had my Vista system lock up before; couldn't even do a ctl-alt-del. The only way out was to unplug the drive from the USB port and Vista then recovered. I was ready to return it to Amazon, but first I reluctantly plugged it back in and it seems to be working OK now. First sign of more troubles though, and back it goes.

This is a nice little compact drive; you really can't beat it for the cost. This would be a great little drive to take files or programs over to a friend's house; or as an archive for your photos; or to transfer files between home and work. It's already NTFS formatted which other drive manufacturers don't do for some reason. Just remember that special short cable. I don't know why it locked up my system (I haven't had any more issues with it) so I'll just assume that it was "one of those things". Also, the SimpleTech support site is pretty thin so don't count on much help there if you run into problems (which you probably won't).

FollowUp: Well, I've been using this drive steadily for a week and a half now and it has given me no further problems. Works fine every time. Based on this (and I'll just assume the original lockup problem was just a fluke) I'm upgrading my score to 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Simpletech is fast   August 5, 2008

Got a 250G drive in the mail quite fast. Plugged it in my laptop and started backing up my stuff one folder at a time. But my folders can really be huge and I was very positively surprised by how fast the data were getting copied over :) Easy to use, nice .. and fast, all this below the $100. Good deal I think :)
