1 out of 5 stars BAD choice   October 8, 2008
Savas Altuntas (Westlake, OH USA)
poor quality
poor data transfer
poor reliability
it WILL fail on you

Move onto something else, right now. This drive is made very cheaply. It is destined to fail in a short time. If you bump into it once it's over. I can't believe it manages to survive through the shipping process. Avoid any external drives that stand up right. Hard drive data recovery services are expensive. Put your investment into a better quality device.

1 out of 5 stars Zero stars DOES NOT WORK WITH XP   September 28, 2008
A book reader (East Baldwin, ME USA)
Google this drive, and other USB externals, for "disappears".
My old seagate USB drives keep chugging away. This piece of junk, AND an Western Digital I've already returned, just "disappear". While in use, etc. Seems to be a very common problem with XP and this new generation of USB drives. Power saving problems? Maybe, who knows. But I've tried everything and it even disappears in the middle of a backup.

JUNK!

Left it on all night by accident one night a month after buying. By morning it didn't turn on anymore. Wanted to use a AC adapter to check if the power adaptor just died but this junkware uses an insane amount of amperes to power that useless light it has in the front. Wasted $20 buying exact model power adapter on ebay out of desperation. It wasn't the power adaptor though, it's the junkware that failed. Lost a lot of valuable data. I hate you forever maxtor.

1 out of 5 stars I do not recommend it.   August 15, 2008

The drive was purchased in April 08. Before it started acting up, it performed well - good data transfer rate, easy set up for backup...etc.

Last week, it refused to power up. I tried different power adapters, power outlets, USB cables, and even different computers. It just didn't power up. I called Seagate and within 30 sec. the customer support person acknowledged the drive was dead and offered me a replacement. However, the warranty did not include recovery of data on the drive. I search the web and found numbers of complaints on similar failure. Now I'm stuck. I don't want to exchange the drive without recovering the data, and who knows if the replacement would not fail the same way.

Stay away from this drive.

The drive worked fine until a mechanical failure. Seagate would not stand by the drive, and wanted $1800 to recover the data. It was 45 days past the warrantee and they were very cold and unhelpful. It turned out that it was just the arm reader was stuck, but after paying $800 to get it opened up and the data moved to a new drive I called Seagate to see if they would at least send me a refurbished drive for the problems, and they stated that they needed to stand by the warrantee. They said they would look into the poor support I got when I first called, but it sounded like they guy was reading off a card. I told them that I was calling to give them a chance to make me want to stay with a Seagate product, and they simply stated that I should because they make excellent drives. The service is worse than poor. The drive worked great when it worked, but just hope you never need to contact them for anything. I felt truly used.
