excellent service from Vantec NexStar NST-350UF May 28, 2006 G. DiGiorgi I have four of these enclosures, two fitted with Hitachi and Western Digital 7200 rpm, 250G drives, and two fitted with matching Seagate 7200rpm 500G drives. I've been using them for a year now as primary and secondary mirrored backup systems. Transfer speed is excellent for FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, I have had no problems whatever in use with them, and they are quiet to the point that I occasionally forget they're running at all: they just work and work without any thought. They cost me about $50 apiece at a local electronics supply firm and took less than 5 minutes each to fit with the drives. I'll likely buy two more soon.
Vantec NexStar External USB 2.0/Firewire Hard Drive Enclosure March 26, 2006 Bill Earle (Phoenix, AZ) The product does exactly what is designed to do, and that is to allow you to take a 3.5 inch hard drive and convert it for portable USB use. It works very well and the only thing that prevents it from getting 5 stars is the use of very small screws to tighten the enclosure. It wasn't a problem for me as my vision is very good but it could prove to be a minor problem for someone who doesn't have at least average vision.
Mediocre build quality. December 8, 2005 J. Lee (SF, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Pros: Looks slick. Budget priced. Combo interface (USB 2.0 and firewire). Fanless silent operation. Cons: Plastic tray. Plastic is VERY poor heat conductor. (it's more of insulator) Aluminum panels don't make good (if any) contact with the drive. Without any fan to move air, I wonder how it's supposed to dissipate the heat. If the aluminum side panels don't act as a heat sink, they will just trap the air inside the case, and make the heat situation worse. Contrary to popular myth, the aluminum case getting hot is actually the indication of the case acting as good heat sink. That's how it helps to cool down the drive. If the case doesn't get hot, and there is no fan, the drive is trapped inside the case without any means of dissipating heat. The firewire interface didn't work well for me. When connected to a computer via firewire, the computer acknowledged the removable drive, but didn't recognize the volume on the drive. The only option was reformatting, which is unacceptable.
