1 out of 5 stars Not ready for retail   August 18, 2008
Ceesa (New Orleans, Lousiana)
This gadget wasn't ready for release when i purchased it, and it still isn't today. No vendor technical support, and a warranty that is not honored don't help.

When I got mine, it had a mark on the screen, a small letter S in a circle, all made of light purple dots. Noticeable, but not that annoying. The dots look like they are pricing stick stamp pad ink color.

After awhile it would fail to fully turn on, it would flash like it was coming on, the logo would display, it would go black and instead of showing the Desktop, it would stay black. If you looked closely, you could still see the remains of the logo.

Emails to Blue Raven technical support were never replied to. I tried for a few days, on and off, to reset the device and get it to work by removing the battery and waiting. It finally started working.

A few weeks later it happened again, and this time after much trying, I finally gave up, figuring it was dead. I tried several months later and it was working again.

Other problems that I am currently having;

1) Videos in formats it doesn't like will lock the unit up. To get it unlocked, I have to unplug the device and remove the battery.

2) The clip that holds the battery in fell apart and not longer functions correctly. I guess it was not meant to be used to turn the unit off.

3) Currently I can plug it in via USB and i get my 2 partitions displayed in Windows (Mine is an 80 GB unit, the hard drive is split into two 40GB partitions, formatted with FAT32) I can copy media to the different folders on the partitions and then they become playable/viewable in the unit (usually, seen #1). I could have sworn that at one time i was able to delete, move and rename files. Not so now. I can also not copy files back out of the unit.

4) Running check disk seems to work, and then gives the error "Windows is unable to complete the disk check." Sometimes when you open up explorer after this happens, everything has disappeared for that drive and I have to use Eject Hardware, unplug the USB cable and plug it back in.

5) Audio playback isn't very bullet proof, damaged MP3s can cause problems, as can damaged JPG images. I'm not sure about video files.

6) Remote stopped working shortly after I purchased the unit, but i have yet to check the battery.

The unit has black buttons down the left and right sides. The icons are lightly printed on the buttons and the most commonly used buttons are wearing clean. The amount varies with the Home key being perfect, and the Enter key being totally clean.

The manufacturer's policy is that the device has a one year limited warrenty and to get an RMA number and warranty service you have to go through the technical support before you can contact customer service.

When it worked it was great, but there are too many problems, no tech support, not warranty repairs, and seemingly, marketing to sell the units. Good luck of you have one, or are thinking of getting one.
