From the supplier: A successful pilot project in Yanceyville, NC uses computer-based language labs to reduce adult illiteracy. The project is funded by the North Carolina Dept of Community Colleges, which has established the Center for Advancing Technology at Piedmont Community College. A needs assessment determined that 38 percent of the local adult population lacked a high school diploma and that even among graduates, technical illiteracy was notable. The pilot project incorporated a number of innovative methods such as child-care provision and cash incentives into the language skills training. A language lab was established that utilized Apple Macintosh IIe and IIgs computers, as well as AT and T 6300 machines and IBM PS/2 computers using such software as Project READY, Learning Styles and Skills Bank II. The pilot was judged a success, and additional programs are being planned.
