Apple Training Series: iWork 09

They say that the only way to really learn a program is "hands-on training". This book provides excellent step-by-step lessons to learn all about Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.

For the newbie this book provides, easy-to-learn, steps that will take you from the beginning throughout the three sections and sixteen lessons. The first seven begins with Keynote where you will learn how to create professional presentations and publishing it in several different formats. The second section is Pages where you will learn publishing letters, reports, newsletters, brochures, posters and more for both print and Internet copies. The third section is Numbers where you will learn about spreadsheets, reports, and budgets. Here is where you will also learn how to create amazing charts, graphs and even a wedding planner to "track the events".

The material inside the book and the DVD-ROM that comes with the book is not only for beginners who are new to iWork programs, but also for those professionals who would like to brush up and ready themselves for the Apple Certification exam. The book has everything you need to train yourself to become a professional at using these three programs.

You begin with Keynote, Lesson 1, learning about themes, sizing, outlining, custom layouts and much more. Other lessons show you how to add photos, charts, sound, and video. If in another life you were a PowerPoint user you will learn how to import PowerPoint presentations into your Keynote presentation. Learn how to easily animate your presentation too. In Lesson 7 you learn the professional touch for presentations. From printing handouts, exporting to PDFs, or to turning your presentation into a movie that can be uploaded to the Internet, slowly you are becoming a professional presenter.

Pages lessons take you learning the basic word processing skills to creating reports, newsletters, brochures, posters, certificates, and how to add sound to a word document that can be uploaded to the Internet.

Numbers is Apple's own spreadsheet. This section will teach you how to use a spreadsheet and much more. For instance, you learn how to import spreadsheet data, add media, create address books, and "Advanced Charting" where you learn things such as "Creating a Stacked 3D Bar Chart" and more. The nuts and bolts of a spreadsheet are covered in areas of formatting, referencing data, performing calculations with variables, etc.

I highly recommend this book and the DVD-ROM for users of all levels wanting to learn how to use these three excellent programs to the max.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Apple certifications   June 14, 2010
Martin Robinson (Arkansas)
I purchased this book to show me everything I needed to know to pass my iWork Associate Certification. I had successfully passed the iLife Associate Certification using Apple Training Series: iLife 09 from the same publisher, so I knew what to expect.

One has to remember that it's not a general how-to guide or "missing manual" type book, as it is geared towards teaching what is on Apple's certification syllabus. So those wanting to know everything there is to know about iWork should probably look elsewhere.

However, this book was perfect for my needs, and I'm sure even experienced iWork users could still learn a thing or two from reading it. If you're considering doing your iWork certification, this is required reading. It also comes with a code for $20 off the cost of the certification exam, which enhances its value even further.

All in all, a highly recommended book.

5 out of 5 stars A real training book!   March 4, 2010

The is a great teaching item if you want to learn how to use Iwork 09. DVD contains useful exercises and then a completed file to compare your work too. Keynote lessons are interesting and useful. Also like how the author introduces "pages" or "numbers" in "keynote" so when you get to those lessons you already have some familiarity with them. Doing the exercises really helps to learn the lessons and/or go back to them when necessary. Does not try to cover every possible item but does refer you to other help so, you don't get the feeling your on overload. Highly recommended for someone who wants to learn the "correct way" rather than "gues and get it done some how".

5 out of 5 stars The Best Resource Book on iWork 09   December 13, 2009

Richard Harrington is a thorough teacher in this great Apple training series text. After completing the Keynote lessons, for example (about half the book is dedicated to this fabulous program), I decided to make a presentation of my own to bring to a job interview for a training position. I used his lessons as my reference when reminding myself of certain techniques he taught. It worked out just great... I included animation, video, photos of course, music, and dialogue. He even helped me in putting it to DVD. I may post it to the [...] site that he introduced me to.

Really, with this book, you need not buy any another - it works well as a reference after completing it especially since iWork's Help menu is so helpful.

I'm hoping the author will write a follow up book with even more projects... I feel like I took a real class with him ... does he ever take a vacation? His book is so thorough and I hear his others are just a great.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute best guide on iWork 09 training   December 7, 2009

The Apple Training Series is designed to replace the classroom environment for learning a particular Apple program and it rarely disappoints. iWork '09 is no exception to this trend. This is not a manual on how to do certain functions within the program, but rather a comprehensive training program complete with a DVD full of sample content. Not only does this book walk you through real world examples of using Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, but this edition of the book focuses heavily on integration of iWork components with each other as well as with the Macintosh Operating System. Complex functions such as mail merges with Pages and Numbers are included. The book does not cover every esoteric aspect of the programs but rather focuses on the functions the average user would need.

This book relies heavily on brilliant full color examples of the concepts being taught. The reader is easily able to compare what is in the book to what is on their Mac's screen. "Teacher, did I do it right?" is easily answered by looking inside this book. Additionally, a review quiz is included at the end of each chapter to make sure you understand the current lesson before moving on.

While instructor-lead programs allow the student to ask questions and interact, the Apple Training Series is about the closest thing you can come to an instructor-lead program without having to leave your home, office, or coffee shop. I always love how the Apple Training Series includes a suggested time frame it takes to do the particular chapter so you can plan your schedule accordingly.

Pros: Excellent real world examples and clear instructions and output specifications
Cons: Absolutely none
